Pyeongchang Olympics Are Almost Upon Us

The Pyeongchang Olympics are just weeks away. Prime Minister Lee Nak Yon and former Olympian Kim Yuna stood side by side to ignite the flame at a ceremonial cauldron and start the Olympic torch relay. The Olympics will be held at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, South Korea. It will last 16 days, from February 9th to February 25th.

           This will be the second Olympic games held in South Korea. Seoul, South Korea hosted the Summer Olympics back in 1988. South Korea has a different timezone than the United States, which means South Korea is 13 hours ahead of New York, 14 hours ahead of Chicago, 16 ahead of Los Angeles, California, and 8 hours ahead of London. Four new events have been added to the Olympics; Air Snowboarding, Freestyle Skiing, Speed Skating, and Mixed Doubles Curling.

           Designer, Lee Suk Woo created the medals for the Games which feature dynamic diagonal lines and three-dimensional consonants from the Korean alphabet. Finally, the 2018 mascot will be a white tiger named Soohorang. According to the Games website, the tiger symbolizes trust, strength, and protection.
