In the past few weeks, a social media platform debate has surfaced regarding which chicken sandwich is better, Chick-Fil-A or Popeyes. Popeyes has now sold out of almost every variation of chicken sandwich on their menu. There has not only been a debate about what sandwich is superior, but the restaurants themselves have gotten in a dispute. Buffalo Wild Wings has also gotten in on the argument with the release of 2 new burgers. What started as a Twitter debate has now turned into a naition-wide shortage of sandwiches.

Popeyes is an American fast-food chain restaurant established in Louisiana 1972, specializing in making fried chicken and a variety of southern soul food. By 1991, Popeyes opened a restaurant internationally located in Malaysia and eventually purchased Church’s Chicken. Today, there  are over 3,000 locations in total. Chick-Fil-A is also an Ameican fast-food restaurant that produces southern food. CFA was established in Georgia, 1946 by Truett Cathy. The business started out as Dwarf Grill, and is where Cathy created the famous sandwich we know today. Chick-Fil-A now owns over 2,400 restaurant locations.

Before the past week, Popeyes southern style chicken sandwich was unheard of. Meanwhile, Chick-Fil-A famous classic chicken sandwich is a fan favorite across the US. The debate began when Popeyes released their chicken on August 12th in collaboration with company, Sweet Dixie Kitchen. Soon after, Chick-Fil-A tweeted about their sandwich, indirectly targeting Popeyes.

The Tweet reads “Bun+Chicken+Pickles= all the love for the original.”

Popeyes then replied starting the sandwich showdown that trended No. 1 on Twitter. Their bad blood went beyond Twitter and made its way onto their restaurants sign boards.  While Popeyes claims that the reason they introduced a chicken sandwich was because it was demanded by customers, not to compete with Chick-Fil-A. Whether or not Popeyes brought the sandwich to the menu or not, people were anxious to get their hands on one. Lines have reached up to 45 minutes long and are beginning to form in the road, before getting into the restaurant. These lengthy lines are even leading to vehicle crashes. Many of these people who do wait out the lines would typically arrive at the window just to find out that they were sold out of sandwiches. Popeyes surprisingly couldn’t keep up with the high demand and has now discontinued the sandwich.

In the midst of Popeyes and Chick-Fil-A’s disputes, people believe that restaurant, Buffalo Wild Wings is trying to get involved in the trend. It’s believed that Buffalo Wild Wings has released 2 new sandwiches to overthrow both restaurants before Chick-Fil-A considers themselves victorious. It’s also questioned what fast food chain won this argument. Chick-Fil-A believes they’ve won along with many others. It’s said that Chick-Fil-A will always have the best fast-food chicken sandwich, despite certain opinions.

In all, no matter what side of the debate you fall on, both establishments are very successful and will only continue to grow from here. The only mistake Popeyes CEO, Jose Cil, said he made was that they underestimated the amount of chicken sandwiches they needs. Cil stated that while they felt prepared for the release of the infamous sandwich they never thought it would “break the internet.”
