With the football season coming to a close, this means basketball season is now beginning. Spirit Cheerleading, Track, Soccer, Baseball, Tennis, and Basketball are preparing for a new season. As the basketball team is gearing up for a new season, so are the girls who cheer them on. The Cheerleaders have now begun conditioning and practices, and plan to learn their cheers by the first home game November 23rd.

While Basketball, Football, and Competition Cheerleading are all similar, they all have differences from each other. Basketball and Football are to cheer on both teams, but cheers are different. Competition Cheerleading is made up moves, tumbling, and stunts to a mix of upbeat songs. Competition Cheer also goes against other teams to win trophies, whereas Spirit Cheerleading does not compete against other schools.

Cheerleading has been at East Hall as long as the school itself has. There  have been many different coaches over the years, and our newest coach is starting her 3rd year coaching Football and Basketball Cheer. Candace Wilbanks is an Instructional Teacher at East Hall Middle, and is newer to coaching at the high school. Also coaching this year with Basketball cheer is Marsha Holtzclaw. Marsha primarily works with Competition Cheer, and is coming back to coaching Spirit Cheerleading.

“My favorite part of coaching is getting to be apart of a special time in a cheerleaders life, being there for them, and encouraging them.”

Cheerleading will also be conditioned with Revolution Cheer to make the team even stronger than ever before. Another change the team is making this year is instead of pep tag for each player, the team will all contribute into making a basket of things to encourage the Basketball Team. Cheerleading also has some new cheers lined up, including dances to go with the music provided by the Pep Band. This year, the JV and Varsity teams will get new uniforms, and warm ups as well. We also plan to have 14 Seniors graduating out of the 19 Varsity Cheerleaders.

“We’re excited about the upcoming basketball with some new coaching staff and cheerleaders coming on board, we are looking forward to an exciting season, says Candace Wilbanks.”

Our Spirit Cheerleaders are overall excited to start a new season cheering on our team. The team is striving to make this season the best yet. The first home basketball game where our Cheerleaders will be on November 23rd.
