Andre’s 5 Likes: Sonic Games

Sonic has been running around for about 28 years, and he’s been through a lot like when he was trying to enter the 3-D world of gaming, surviving through games that were considered “bad”, battling against a red italian plumber, and many more. But no can deny that Sonic will and forever recognized as Sega’s mascot. Along with that and everything Sonic has went through, he had some success in his life. These particular games are my personal favorite.

5. Sonic Rivals – 2006(PlayStation Portable)

Personally this was the first Sonic game I played.. Sonic Rivals is a racing video game, part of the Sonic the Hedgehog series that was released in late 2006. It is the first Sonic game developed by Backbone Entertainment, for the PlayStation Portable. It consists of characters racing to the finish line while avoiding the level’s obstacles. The game contains six zones, each with three respective acts, the third being a boss battle, totaling  17 stages. There’s only 5 characters in the game; Sonic the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog, Silver the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, and Metal Sonic. Even though the game isn’t that big of a Sonic game, it would be a good game for someone to sit back and relax to play.

4. Sonic Heroes – 2003(Gamecube)

What goes up, must come down, yet my feet don’t touch the ground. See the world spinning upside down, a mighty crash without a soun- oh wait, I’m supposed to be talking about the game….. Even though I haven’t played the game before, I’ve seen countless of gameplay of the game, and I believe I would have a good time playing it. Sonic Heroes is 3-D platform game where it consists mainly on teamwork as you play as 3 characters in a team. Each person on each team consists of unique abilities, the 3 main abilities is speed, flight, and power. There are four 3-man teams, first Team Sonic consists of Sonic, Miles “Tails” Prower, and Knuckles, then there’s Team Dark which has Shadow, Rouge the Bat, and E-123 Omega, then there’s Team which has Amy Rose, Cream the Rabbit, and Big the Cat, and finally Team Chaotix which has Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy Bee. Sonic Heroes is liked by many because of it’s colorful graphics, and cheesy story, and it can be a good game for kids to enjoy and add to their Sonic video game collection.

3. Sonic Rush – 2005(Nintendo DS)

Personally, this was the first ever Sonic game I had and the game that got me into Sonic the Hedgehog.  Sonic Rush is a 2D platform game, similar to earlier games in the series as well as later ones like The Sonic Advance series. Levels in the game are side-scrolling and displayed using both of the DS’s screens. However, boss battles, the main characters’ sprites, and a special stage are rendered in 3D, creating a 2.5D effect. The game’s 2.5D format was based on Sonic Team’s idea to combine elements from 2D and 3D games in the series. Upon release, Sonic Rush was well-received by critics, with praise stemming from the game’s music and similarity to older games in the series and criticism stemming from its overall quickness. Sonic Rush only consists of 2 playable characters; Sonic and newcomer at the time, Blaze the Cat. My experience from this game was great, I mainly enjoyed everything Sonic Rush had in-stored for me.

2. Sonic Generations – 2011(PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, PC)

One of the greatest modern Sonic games, celebrating Sonic’s 20th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the series. The significance of Sonic Generations is the fact that you can play as both Sonic in his early games(Classic) and Sonic in his late games(Modern)

It features two gameplay styles: “Classic”, which plays from a side-scrolling perspective like that of the original Sega Genesis Sonic games, and “Modern”, 3D levels similar to those in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors. Sonic Generations mainly consists of reliving stages, rival battles, and boss battles in Sonic’s history. The game received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, selling 1.85 million copies by May 2012. Reviewers found its visuals, audio, and gameplay to be highlights, and called it a good tribute to the franchise.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – 1992(Sega Genesis)

One of the best Sonic games known to man. This was also the first 2-D Sonic game I ever played. Sonic 2 was released worldwide in November 1992, it is the second main entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. This game marked the debut of the lovable two-tailed yellow fox, who is Sonic’s best buddy and side-kick, Tails. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sold over six million copies, making it the second-best selling Genesis game behind the original Sonic the Hedgehog. It received highly positive reviews from critics, who commended the game’s level design and visuals. This game would be part of multiple Sonic collection-type games, where you can play multiple Sonic games in one. If you like Sonic the Hedgehog and would wish to play his games, I would recommend starting with this game.
