The first trailer of the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie was released on April 30th, 2019 and the movie was originally scheduled to be released on November 8th, 2019. However there were tons of negative reactions to the design of Sonic the Hedgehog, with that, the designers at Paramount Pictures decided to listen to the fans and delay the movie  to fix Sonic’s design.

The main reason for the delay was only because of Sonic’s design. Fans got their first look at the Sonic the Hedgehog movie through a motion poster. But what got people talking(Negativity) were photos of a different Sonic poster that showed off the character’s legs. However, nothing could compare to the overwhelmingly negative responses to the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer. From Sonic’s human teeth to the differences to Sonic’s game design, fans of the blue hedgehog had many complaints about the movie’s take on the character. The response was so bad, the film’s director, Jeff Fowler, announced Sonic the Hedgehog would get a redesign.

Luckily on November 12th, Paramount Pictures released the 2nd official Sonic the Hedgehog Movie trailer with a new designed Sonic. People say that this was a relief for the movie and the people who made the movie. Sonic no longer looks like a nightmarish experiment. The human teeth have been removed, he has big doe eyes, not the small eyes of the original trailer. The new design genuinely captures a lot of what original character designer Naoto Ohshima set out to achieve a cool but cuddly mascot. His fur is bright, mimicking the famed Sega blue of the company’s classic arcade games. He is no longer terrifying, an important achievement for a family film.

A few people I’ve interviewed have their thoughts on the new design of Sonic.

ROTC Cadet Julius Rodriguez says “It’s way better than the last one and looks actually good for a real-life version of him”.

East Hall Graduate Class of 2019 Eduardo Gonzales says “In my opinion, it’s a way better design than the first one. We looked at the old design and it was creepy and weird looking, but this new sonic design looks amazing on par with cartoon and realism. I know the eyes are not connected like in the games, but this is something that I’ll let it slide with the personality Sonic has, again, it’s like Sonic in the games”.

East Hall Graduate Class of 2019 Jahir Zuniga says “It definitely improves from the first design the creators had put out. It’s nice to know that they listened to the community’s ideas to make the best possible sonic that everyone loves”.

Sonic fans are now happy and relieved because of the new Sonic design and hope that the movie itself, is a success.
