East Hall is in the midst of it’s basketball season and during the winter break East Hall’s basketball coach Seth Vining resigned. Vining ultimately decided to step down after Day 1 of the Lanierland Tournament after a devastating 56-52 loss against West Hall. The team was 4-7 with Vining as coach. Despite the Vikings rough started this season, their recent wins are putting them in a good position for the rest of the season.

“I appreciate the opportunity East Hall has given me, but at this moment, I feel it is in the best interest of all involved that I step down as head basketball coach and into full retirement,” says Coach Vining.

Seth Vining stepped out of retirement to return as the East Hall Basketball coach in March 2019 after coaching the Vikings from 1993-2004. Vining has had the most success with the team in EH Basketball history. Coach Vining has taken the team to seven semi-finals, two state runner-ups, taken home two state titles in 2001 and 2003. He has also had two successful state titles with the girls’ team in 1979 and 1980. In 2004

Vining coached at Lakeview Academy and took home a region championship which was a first in Lakeview history.

After 6 years in retirement, the entire Hall County Community was surprised to see that he was going to return as coach. The East Hall Community rallied around the coach congratulating him on the success. It was also a shock to the community when Vining decided it was best for him to resign. Not much information has been released as to why he decided to leave in the middle of the season. Coach Vining was hired to replace Seth Thompson position as head coach, but Thompson stayed with the team as an assistant manager. Last season, Thompson’s team was 13-15 and took the team to playoffs losing against Calhoun 76-60. Now that Coach Vining has resigned Thompson will take over head coach for the rest of the season.

“Seth decided that he wanted to step down, he said it was the best option for him and his team,” says athletic director and Assistant Principal, Adam Rich.

Since Vining resigned the basketball team played against Dawson County, where Thompson served as head coach for the first time since last season. Even though the boys suffered a tough loss against the Tigers, we hope that the team will get redemption at the game against North Hall on Friday, January 10th. All of East Hall will continue to rally around the boys team through this tough time in the season.
