According to FeedingAmerica.org, in 2019, 5.2 million seniors faced hunger in America. That’s 1 in 14 seniors or 7.1% of all seniors. 63% of seniors visiting food banks say they have to choose between food and medical care. This serious problem had seen little effort to alleviate it, but since 1965, Meals on Wheels has been serving Georgia’s elders. Over 2.4 million seniors receive support from Meals on Wheels every year. Non-profit organizations like Meals on Wheels need all the help they can get, with Meals on Wheels receiving help primarily through the donations and volunteer work of the common person. East Hall High School students are among those providing work for Meals on Wheels.

Coach Espinoza, who is one of East Hall’s football coaches, serves as one of the members of our staff that ensures the program proceeds smoothly. When asked about what Meals on Wheels does, Coach Espinoza said, “It provides meals for those in the surrounding community that need meals provided due to medical or transportation issues”. Meals on Wheels works by packaging pre-made meals and delivering them to the elder’s homes. This food is either delivered hot,

cold, or frozen depending on whatever the families need. The Meals on Wheels division that East Hall is involved in delivers, according to Coach Espinoza, “They provide food for areas that cover Chestatee, Gainesville, all the way through Lula, Tadmore area, some in Oakwood, so they really provide food all around the county”. Meals on Wheels is always looking for help, mainly for volunteer work. This may involve preparing and packing up food, as well as delivering and is open to just about anyone willing to help.
